We tend to underestimate how long it takes for the body to heal from chronic imbalance or illness.

That’s because we often fail to recognize how long we’ve actually been experiencing imbalance in the first place.

I was recently reminded of this in the most unexpected way—through a single fingernail.

Like many healthcare providers and healers, I was drawn to this work because of my own health challenges. Some were obvious—big enough to demand attention—but others were subtle. The smaller ones were easy to ignore: not life-threatening, not particularly painful, and not clearly connected to any one issue.

One such sign was my right thumbnail. For years, it grew in a convex shape, brittle and easily chipped. I noticed it every time I trimmed my nails, but because it wasn’t “serious,” I brushed it aside. I figured it was probably a simple vitamin imbalance and assumed it would resolve with general improvements to my diet.

And sometimes, it did improve—just enough for me to forget about it—before it returned again.

Then, earlier this week, something shifted.

As I trimmed my nails (a frequent task—I keep them short so I don’t poke anyone when adjusting them!), I noticed that this particular nail looked… normal. Smooth. Strong. Balanced. It startled me a little because it had been years since that was the case.

So I asked myself—what changed?

Over the past year, I’ve learned that my body has an inborn metabolic error, and I’ve adjusted my nutrition and supplementation accordingly. But even after that discovery, the nail didn’t improve. The real change came when I finally started being consistent—taking a high-quality multivitamin, enzymes, and omega-3s daily, without skipping or switching brands.

It’s almost embarrassing to admit, but despite being a practitioner who recommends consistent nutritional support to my clients, I hadn’t been very consistent myself. I would try something new for a few months, see if I noticed a difference, and then move on.

Can you relate?

Maybe you’ve tried a supplement, or a new diet, or a new morning routine—only to stop after a few months when it didn’t deliver quick results, or when life got busy, or when the cost made you second-guess its worth.

Here’s the truth: if it takes years for an imbalance to show up, it can take nearly as long to restore balance. Healing is not a one-time event; it’s an ongoing process.

The key?

Consistency. Patience. And often, mindset support.

Because sometimes, our lack of consistency isn’t about willpower or discipline—it’s about subconscious resistance. Old patterns and limiting beliefs can subtly sabotage our best intentions, making it harder to stay consistent even when we know what we need to do.

That was true for me, and it’s true for many of my clients. Once I began addressing those deeper mindset patterns—alongside the functional nutrition work—my healing became more complete.

Even my nail agrees.

The Lesson: Give Your Body (and Mind) Time to Heal

If you’re feeling frustrated by slow progress on your wellness journey, take this as a gentle reminder that your body wants to heal—it just needs consistency, time, and the right support.

If you’ve been doing “all the right things” but still feel stuck, there may be more going on beneath the surface—nutritionally and mentally.

That’s exactly what I help people uncover through Functional Nutrition & Mindset Coaching. Together, we look at both the physical and subconscious patterns that influence your health, so you can finally experience the lasting change your body’s been working toward all along.
