We are not our genes.
This idea, popularized by Bruce Lipton in The Biology of Belief, shifted the way many of us understand health. What we now know—through both research and real-world practice—is that genetic expression is deeply influenced by perception, environment, and daily inputs.
In other words, your genes may set the stage, but they do not write the entire story.
So how do we translate that into the practice of healing?
If healing is innate—as we’re taught in chiropractic philosophy—why do we become unwell in the first place? And more importantly, how do we begin to shift our environment and beliefs toward ones that actually support the health we want to experience?
These are not just theoretical questions. They are the questions I sit with daily, both for myself and for the people I serve.
Where Healing Often Gets Stuck
One of the tools I use to begin this conversation is genomic testing.
Many people come in focused on gathering data—gut microbiome analysis, nutrient panels, food sensitivity testing. And while those can be helpful, I often find that they’re only showing us the symptoms of a deeper imbalance.
What’s underneath?
For many, it’s how their body is functioning at a genetic level.
I see this pattern over and over again: people struggling with chronic digestive issues, fatigue, inflammation, headaches, brain fog, and joint pain. They’ve tried multiple approaches—conventional and alternative. Special diets. Allergy protocols. Energy work. Supplements.
They’re doing “everything right,” and still not feeling well.
And that can be incredibly frustrating.
When Effort Isn’t the Problem
If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing all the right things but not getting the results you expected, you’re not alone.
When you’re dealing with ongoing pain or fatigue—and you know that food, chemicals, and mindset play a role—it makes sense to try everything you can to feel better.
But sometimes, the missing piece isn’t more effort.
It’s better information.
The Role of Your Genes in Daily Function
Your genes influence how efficiently your body carries out essential processes like detoxification, nutrient conversion, and energy production.
For example:
- If your body doesn’t detoxify efficiently due to reduced enzyme activity, toxins can build up faster than your body can clear them.
- If your system struggles to convert B vitamins into usable forms, your energy production may suffer—even if your diet looks “healthy” on paper.
- If certain inflammatory pathways are more easily activated, your body may stay in a low-grade inflammatory state longer than it should.
And here’s the part that can feel confusing:
You can have normal lab work and still feel terrible.
Because standard testing doesn’t always show how well your body is functioning—only what levels are present in the moment.
Why Inflammation Keeps Showing Up
Inflammation is often described as the root of many health challenges—and for good reason.
It’s not inherently bad. Inflammation is a protective response.
But when the systems that regulate it are out of balance, it becomes chronic.
That imbalance can show up across multiple pathways:
- Hormones
- Nutrient metabolism
- Neurotransmitter production
- Immune signaling
When these systems aren’t communicating efficiently, the body can get stuck in a loop of compensation rather than healing.
Bringing It Back to Empowerment
This is where the conversation becomes hopeful.
Because if your genes are influenced by your environment, that means you have leverage.
Small, consistent shifts in:
- Nutrition
- Stress perception
- Sleep patterns
- Environmental exposures
- Thought patterns and beliefs
…can begin to change how your body expresses those genes over time.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about alignment.
And it’s about understanding your body well enough to support it in the way it actually needs—not just what works for someone else.
A Different Starting Point
Genomic insights don’t define you.
They give you a starting point.
They help explain why your body might respond the way it does—and where to focus your energy so that your efforts actually create change.
Because healing isn’t about chasing symptoms.
It’s about restoring function.
And when function improves, the body has an incredible capacity to move back toward balance.
If you’re curious about how your unique genetics may be influencing your inflammation, detox pathways, or energy levels, this is a conversation worth having.
Not from a place of fear—but from a place of understanding.
That’s where real, sustainable healing begins.
